Chapter 23

Confidence, don’t leave me now, I pray, though I can already feel it wilting in the silence that follows my speech as Zane cracks a smile.

“So…you’ll have to show me…you know…vampire stuff.” God, stop talking now.

Zane busts out laughing.

“Oh, childe!” Evelyn cries, and rushes to me as I’m ducking to hide my humiliation, kissing me on the forehead and gathering up my hands.

“Oh, you’re wonderful!” she cries and laughs, swinging around me like we’re dancing. I barely lift my arms in time to accommodate her twirl, and she spins once underneath, the dress unable to billow, but somehow she makes it look good.

“You’re just perfect!” She ropes an arm around the back of my neck.

My eyes go wide as saucers as she tugs me down, lips and mouth closing over mine in a far more intimate kiss than I’m prepared for.

Zane finds this hilarious, throwing his head back and stumbling backwards until he hits the wall.

I glance at Darius. His surprise mirrors mine for all of a second, then he’s by my side and untangling me from her clutches.

“Alright, alright, that’s enough,” he grumbles, putting me back in his arms.

“Oops, sorry.” She blinks innocently and puts a hand to her lips, like she might have burped by mistake rather than slipped me some tongue.

Finding his breath, Zane asks, “Can we all kiss him?”

Darius’s expression goes about ten shades more insidious as we both answer, “No!”

He laughs again, but I doubt he was completely joking.

“Welcome to the family, sweet dove,” Zane says. “A handshake will do for me.”

He strides to me with a hand offered, and I ignore Darius’s tension, clasping it warmly.

“Thank you.”

“Oh no, thank you. You don’t know how rare it is to find someone who survives the change, and those that do rarely take well to it. Our traditions are harsh, but they’re often necessary. I hope we didn’t scare you.”

A little bit, but I knew Darius wouldn’t let them take me away and lock me up. I won’t tell him that though.

Jovially, I say, “What actually scares me is this place.”

He cocks an eyebrow. “Why?”

Are you blind? I want to say.

“Well, for starters…there’s no shower.” And I’d really like one, honestly. I’ve been in two car wrecks since becoming a vampire. “And there’s no electricity. Where am I supposed to charge my phone? Uh, I will get a phone, won’t I? I mean, obviously, once you guys trust me, not right away. But you know, I like being a vampire and all, but…I don’t like being homeless.”

I wonder if I’ve said something wrong by the way they look at me, the joy held in place by will rather than emotion, the smiles fading from their eyes.

Darius squeezes me in a warm hug. “As long as you have family, you will never be homeless.”

“That’s right,” Evelyn agrees.

“Oh, don’t worry little one. We have our ways,” Zane assures me, but even he seems to be hiding something. “I’ll find you nice a phone. After I trust you, of course.
